Basketball Tournament Results (2Feb19)

This past weekend saw our four teams play in their respective  tournaments...

JR Boys (Coach Janzen)

The boys started the McCoy Tournament with a win playing strong to a 67-39 win. They worked hard and were able to practice various sets. Top scorers were Michael and Jamison. Player Of The Game went to Edey (Hawk) C who dominated both ends of the floor.

The team advanced to the finals (facing McCoy) by winning Saturday’s game. Trailing early in the game, the boys slowly broke away to come within three points with a minute left. Unfortunately, they had some slip-ups on defense and ended up losing the final.

Congratulations to our Junior Boys who fought hard all weekend and represented our school well

SR Boys (Coach Gwilliam)

The team had an up and down weekend at the Bishop O’Byrne Bobcat Bowl. The draw included six of the top fifteen ‘4A ‘ teams, and the 3rd ranked ‘3A’ team. Needless to say it was a great test for the Falcons.

We opened the weekend against a hostile home crowd for the 5th-ranked Bobcats. We came out on fire with a ferocious defense and quieted the crowd as we took a 14-point lead into half time. The third quarter saw a spirited comeback by the Bobcats and the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 69. A back-and-forth final quarter saw the Falcons and Bobcats tied with just 3 minutes remaining. The Bobcats hit some big shots in the stretch and pulled away with a 96-85 victory. Leading scorers: Logan R (18 pts); Jaxen P (18 pts); Hunter B (15 pts); Josh P (15 pts).

In the second game the Falcons faced a scrappy, energetic, young squad from All Saints High School. We looked sluggish for most of the game and as a result the score went back and forth with both teams seeing leads though the game. All Saints, the 3rd ranked ‘3A’ team, closed the game with a little run to secure a 75-70 win. Leading scorers: Justin C (20 pts); Jaxen P (12 pts); Hunter B. (15 pts).

In the final game of the tournament the determined Falcons played the high flying Father Lacombe Lasers. We played well with great team effort and a dominant performance by Justin C. Justin owned the paint pouring in 34 points and 15 rebounds. The team built a 10-point lead at half, 53-43 in the high scoring affair. We pushed the lead to 25 in the fourth quarter against the 15th ranked Lasers and were able to see all players contribute off the bench. The team finished with a 109-96 win. Top scorers were, Justin C (34 pts; 15 rebounds), Hunter B (25 pts), Jaxen P (12 pts; 11 rebounds), Cley P (11 pts).

The team will head to Edmonton to play in the Harry Ainlay Tri-Provincial Tournament, opening Thursday night at 5 pm against Oak Park from Winnipeg.

The Falcons will host their own home tournament February 15-16 at the Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks. The team’s first game will be at 6:30 pm, Friday the 15th.

JV Girls (Coach Dick)

Results for Red Deer’s Lindsay Thurber tourney (Red Deer)

  • 57-61 loss to Thurber
  • 47-25 win over Lacombe
  • 41-67 loss to Aberhart

We play HTA at home on Tuesday night (boys at 5:30; girls at 7:15)

SR Girls (Coach Hunter)

The girls played hard on Thursday but fell behind in the fourth quarter and never recovered. Friday’s game was another close one with the same results.

We have a young team this year that shows moments of greatness and continues to get stronger with every game.
