To our Foothills Composite High School staff team and community,

As you are aware several new cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed in individuals associated with Foothills Composite High School over the last few weeks, 17 cases since March 28, 2021.   Though many of these cases occurred before the Easter break, we have also been notified of 6 cases since April 11, 2021.  As always, our thoughts remain with all of these individuals and their families.  We wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

We have worked closely with Alberta Health Services as well as Alberta Education during the course of the week to ensure that we follow their ongoing recommendations.  We have also consulted with them about the number of cases at the school and best next steps for the school community.  Earlier today, we received authorization for a temporary two week transition to online learning at the school.

Please note that ALL Grade 10-12 students at Foothills Composite High School will temporarily transition from in-person to online learning beginning Monday April 19, 2021.  Initial learning plans will be sent to students on the 19th  Please contact the school to arrange for a technology loan if needed.  In-person learning will resume for these students on Monday May 3, 2021.

Students with complex needs, students requiring socio-emotional support and students who may require specialized equipment to continue their studies can contact the school to schedule their attendance with all applicable health guidelines in place.

We understand and respect that this may be challenging for families and students.  Please know that throughout the pandemic, our decisions have been based on the priority of safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of students and staff as well as enabling a continuity of learning.  This decision is made through that lens and includes consideration of increasing case numbers at the school, student absentee numbers at the school, numbers of students and staff currently self isolating, as well as Divisional capacity in meeting the operational needs of the system.

We know this news can be distressing and supports are available.  You are encouraged to visit our Parent Learning Link and Student Learning Link.  Please also know that you may be eligible for federal support through the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit or the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit.

We remind families to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist.  If you or a member of your family has any of the symptoms of illness listed, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811.

The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is paramount.  Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.  We look forward to putting the pandemic behind us as soon as possible.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Chris Fuzessy, Superintendent of Schools
