All_Shook_Up_colorTICKETS FOR MAIN STAGE NOW ON SALE

Things are really shaking at the Foothills Composite High School and the Alberta High School of Fine Arts as students gear up for another blockbuster Main Stage show scheduled to hit the stage this February.

After their epic success with last year’s production of Les Miserables, Main Stage director James Keary has changed gears by a couple of centuries. This year, Keary and his talented team are working on the high-energy ‘50s based musical production of “All Shook Up”.

As part of the Musical Theatre class last spring, Keary asked the students to “pitch” a show of their choosing to the directors and fellow students. The successful pitch would be the production performed by the 2012 Main Stage students.

“It’s a show we could relate to in one way or another,” said Grade 11 student Cherisse Grimm who along with Amber MacMullin and Logan Coutts pitched “All Shook Up”. “The theme is lighter than Les Mis,” explained MacMullin. “The music is fun and happy. There is a lot of dancing and it’s Elvis, so it catches the audience.” Coutts added, “Almost everyone knows Elvis and will know the songs. It’s upbeat and the audience will want to sing along.”

The Foothills Falcons got a valuable lesson from their cross-town rivals prior to classes ending for the Christmas break — play hard until the final buzzer or you might just snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. falcons_basketball

The Falcons were able to hang on for a 67-59 victory over the Holy Trinity Academy (HTA) Knights after building up a 20-point half-time lead in Foothills Athletic Council boys basketball action Dec. 21 at Foothills Composite High School in front of approximately 400 fans.

“In the second half we let up too much because we had a 20-point lead and we thought we had the win before we actually did,” said Falcons co-captain Tyler Grigor.

“HTA is a good team, they definitely outworked us.

“We have to play every team we play like they are the best team in the province.”

The Knights fell behind 40-20 after 20 minutes but were able to cut the lead to 51-32 after three quarters. They exploded to score 27 points in the final 10 minutes and the never-say-die Knights were able to get within seven points at 64-57 when James LaGrange hit a jump shot for two of his game high 30 points with about 1:20 left in the game.

The Foothills Falcons Senior girls basketball team is going into thier pre-Christmas tilt against thier cross-tqon rivals on a high note.

The Falcons sit on top of the Foothills Athletic Council with 3-0 record after beating the Strathmore Spartans 89-22 on Dec.14.

Foothills also fininshed fourth at the Bert Church Tournament in Airdrie which was held Dec. 15-17 ,  after losing the bronze medal to Hunting Hills from Red Deer 59-44 in Airdrie.

"We were with them until the final six minutes of the fourth quater," said Falcons coach Lana Gwilliam. "We just kind of let down on defence and didn't box out. They scored 25 points in the fourth quater we only got seven."

The Falcons had to settle for the bronze medal mathc after losing to William Aberhart Trojans 64-59 in the semifinal.

' It was a back and forth battle which was good for our girls to experience," said Gwilliam. "We were up by two half-time but we just gave up too many second shots and it cost us."

In the semifinal Amy Woodridge led the Falcons in scoring with 20 points, while Angie Minue finished with 13 points, Nichole Rapp a Grade 11 student palying her first year of Senior ball, also finished in double digits with 10 points.

The Falcons opened the tournament by clobbering Bellarose 81-32 on Dec.16 and Minue led the Falcons in scoring 22 points.

Gwilliam said one of the advantages of playing in the tournament was to give the Falcons more experience with 4A schools, such as the Aberhart Trojans. The Falcons are the lone 4A school palying in the Foothills Athletic Council.

"There is a big difference between playing 3A and 4A," Gwilliam said. "There's alot more physically. On the weekend the girls were complaining about the other teams reaching and grabbing and i told them : Guess what? You've got to play through it. Some girls haven't had as much experience with pushing and shoving."

When the Big Rock Football League announced its Most Valuable Player in December it caught one player by total surprise. falcons_brooks

That would be the MVP, Foothills Falcon Taylor Brooks.

“I really don’t know why I was the MVP,” Brooks said. “I guess it might be my attitude. I believe you have to have an attitude that you have to do your best at your job to make a difference on every play.”

The athletic Brooks had plenty of jobs. He was a defensive back, ran back kicks and punts, but most importantly was the flyback (running back) in the Falcons’ high-tech fly offence.

The Falcons finished with a 2-1 record in the Big Rock Football League, losing to the Holy Trinity Academy Knights in the league final.

“I think the big things is, lets say a big play, make a cut, that you can walk away and say: ‘Hey, I did great on that play’” Brooks said. “I had a punt return against Highwood I took back and a big play against Rundle.

Basketball: Foothills, HTA play Dec. 21 at 7:15pm at the Comp.

When the Holy Trinity Academy Knights and the Foothills Falcons Senior boys teams clash for the first time on the basketball court this season they will both be feeling pretty good about themselves after their performance last weekend.

The Falcons finished second in the Ross Sheppard Invitational Seniors Boys tournament in Edmonton when they were beaten 82-80 by J. Percy Page from Edmonton in the final.

After a 95-32 blowout of the Strathmore Spartans on Dec. 14 it was the Falcons' first test on the floor.

The Falcons opened the Ross Shepard tourney by beating a strong 3A school, Camrose High School 72-67 on Dec. 16.

"It was really our first game against a competitive team." said Falcons coach Amron Gwilliam. "Our offence isn't nearly as good as it could be, but the kids played hard and that was good to see."

The Falcons' Ray Goff led Foothills with 31 points and 15 boards. Rookie guard Jamie Derochie contributed 10 points.

The victory pushed Foothills to the semifinal where they came up against a suprising opponent - Morinville High School, which upset host Ross Sheppard in the opening round.
