Auditions for this year's Mainstage production: Les Miserables will be taking place at FCHS/AHSFA on the following dates:
     •   Thursday, August 26th starting at 3:30 pm (grade 10s)
     •   Friday, August 27th starting at 2:30 pm (grades 11/12)

If you are unable to make the scheduled audition dates it is necessary that you contact James Keary (Artistic Director) before August 25th.

Keeping in mind what is best for students, we are auditioning before classes start so that if students are not ready for this year’s Mainstage production their schedules can be altered so that they get registered for the correct classes come Tuesday, August 31st.

The audition will consist of a short piece of prepared choreography which students will learn in the dance studio at 3:30 pm on August 26th and 2:30 pm on August 27th.  All students must be on time and in dance-wear with hair tied back as the choreography will only be taught during this half hour period.  Upon arrival at the school students can sign up for their audition time.

Students must also have prepared :
    •   A musical theatre song selection to sing.  Please have accompaniment (on cd or ipod) with no background vocals.
    •   A contemporary theatrical monologue (not a movie monologue) of two to three minutes in length.
    •   The monologue should be memorized with minimal to no props.  It cannot be written by the auditionee.

New students to the Mainstage program are asked to bring a head-shot photo (doesn't have to be professional) to the audition.

If you have any questions please contact one of the directors after August 15th: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Twins heading to track provincials PDF Print E-mail

Twin sisters will end their high school athletic career by competing in the provincial track and field championships this weekend in Medicine Hat.

Foothills Falcons Seniors Courtney and Kaitlin Thomas took home four first-place ribbons from the South Central Zone championships May 25 in Calgary to qualify for the provincial finals June 4-5 in Medicine Hat.

Kaitlin outlasted teammate Zoe Threlfall to win the Senior girls 1,500m and she romped to victory in the 3,000 metres as well.

Her sister Courtney took first place in the Senior girls 800m when she stumbled over the finish line to edge Christine Patterson of the Cochrane Cobras in a photo finish.

“I started out really fast and Kaitlin told me to pace myself better,” Courtney said. “So with about 150 metres she (Patterson) passed me. At first I thought I would just let her go because I was going to get second and go to provincials and then I thought I should go for it.”

With approximately 50 metres to go, Courtney attempted to pass on the inside line.

“I was trying to get my head further and further and throw my body out,” Thomas said. “I fell because it was a little crowded.”

She broke the plastic finish line pole as she fell to the ground.

Officials ruled Courtney did not crowd Patterson and she was declared the winner.

Courtney also won the Senior girls long jump with a leap of 4.82m.

In preparing for the zone final Kaitlin learned from her loss to Threlfall in the 1,500m the week before at the divisional track meet in High River.

“Last week, she kicked on the last 100 metres to beat me,” Kaitlin said. “This time I made sure to save up enough energy and right at the end of the last 100 metres I was able to beat her.”

Kaitlin’s time in the 1,500m was 5:40.16. Threlfall finished second with a time of 5:41.76 and she also qualified for provincials.

Kaitlin also won the Senior girls 3,000m in a time of 12:46.81 more than 30 seconds better than the second place runner.

The Thomas girls also teamed up with Rachel Baxter and Melanie Fisher to win  the Open girls 4×400m relay for the Falcons.

Some members of the Falcons’ 4×100m Intermediate boys relay team took a big step to getting back on the provincial medal podium.

The Falcons team of Kris Stretton, Logan Northcott, Devan Karl and Adam Carruthers took first place at zones finishing more than two seconds ahead of St. Joseph’s High School.

“I was maybe three or four metres behind when I passed the baton and then Logan got us caught up,” Stretton said. “Then Devan gave us the lead.”

Karl made a clean pass to Carruthers who took off like he was the roadrunner and Karl was the coyote just behind him. All that was missing was a cloud of smoke and a beep-beep.

“It was one of the best baton exchanges I ever had,” said Carruthers about the pass. “I was just trying to focus on getting to the finish line.”

Carruthers, Northcott and Stretton were members of the Falcons Junior boys’ team which won the provincial silver medal last year.

“I think we can win it this year,” Stretton said. “We are definitely faster this year.”

Carruthers also won the boys Intermediate 400m and was second in the 100m.

track-brewster1notrecord1Foothills Falcon Jake Brewster easily clears the bar in an early round of the Junior boys high jump at South Central Zones on May 25 in Calgary. Brewster went on to win the South Central title by clearing 2.00m.

If a Foothills Composite High School athlete can reproduce his effort from the South Central Zone track meet at the provincial championships this weekend he will have his name in the record books.

Jake Brewster cleared the bar at 2m to easily take home first place in the Junior boys high jump at the South Central Zones at Glenmore Athletic Park in Calgary May 25.

The provincial record is 2m, however, results at zones are considered unofficial because qualified officials aren’t at the event. If Brewster can repeat his performance this weekend at provincials in Medicine Hat, his name will go in the record books.

The Grade 10 student isn’t worrying about that though.

“I just want to try and win another red ribbon,” Brewster said while clutching his winning ribbon from zones. “It will totally depend on the weather if I have a chance to get a record. If it’s cold or wet it might bother me. All I can do is try my best.”

Two metres is approximately six-feet-six inches, which is akin to Brewster jumping over Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan.

Trying his best was not only good enough to set an unofficial record at South Central Zones, it was also good enough to give him first place in both the Junior boys long jump and triple jump at 5.96m and 12.00m respectively.

It was at the high jump pit where Brewster’s performance drew a large crowd cheering him on.

He won the competition when Alex Vincent of Canmore went out at 1.79m.

Brewster wasn’t done then though.

He didn’t miss until 1.90m, but he cleared the bar in his second attempt. He then got over 1.95m and asked for the bar to be set at two metres.

“Dylan Popkes (Falcons volunteer coach) said the highest he had ever jumped was about two metres and I wanted to try it,” Brewster said.

He made the crowd hang in there as Brewster missed his first attempt.

“I didn’t arch enough when I went over and I hit the bar with the back of my legs,” Brewster said. “On my second jump I left too soon.”

On his third and final attempt, Brewster cleared the bar and a loud ovation went up at Glenmore Athletic Park.

Foothills Falcons coach Carolyn Lenstra said she wasn’t surprised Brewster won the event, but she was astonished at how he did it.

“It was amazing what he did,” Lenstra said. “There aren’t any official records (for South Central Zones) but I’m sure that would be the record for Junior boys.”

Three jumpers hold the provincial record of 2m and the last one to do it was Haig Leonce from Calgary in 1998.

At present, the lone foothills area resident to hold a provincial track and field record is Brad McCuaig, a then High Riverite who attended Foothills Composite High School. McCuaig set a Junior boys record of 10.95 seconds in the 100m in 1987. He would go on to run for Canada’s Olympic 4×100m relay team in Sydney, Australia in 2000.

The Foothills Composite High School Falcons can hang another banner in the gymnasium, this time for soccer.

The Falcons knocked off Canmore at home 2-1 after penalty shots for the win. Keegan Dargie scored the only goal for the Falcons and the game remained tied at 1-1 after regulation time.

“All the games this year have been one goal games, for and against us,” said Falcons co-coach Paul Barrett, “It’s been very close and we are very fortunate to come out on top of all these games.”

Two overtime periods were played but neither team could score. Falcons goaltender Chris McCabe made two saves for his team in the shoot-out.

Barrett said the win marks his first title as a high school soccer coach.

“We had a very good core group of players,” said Barrett.

Defence proved to be the deciding factor for the Falcons, who came into the boy’s soccer playoffs as a wildcard.

“That was one of the reasons we did so well, I think. Our defence was solid, there was no weak links anywhere,” said Barrett.

On May 26, the Falcons knocked off top seed, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights, 1-0 in a semi-final game to qualify for the championship game in Canmore.

Clay Reboul, Nic Bulmer, Kale Parker, Clint Dunford and Will Barrett scored in the shoot-out for the Falcons.

South central zones are set to start at 9 a.m., June 2 in Chestermere.
