Education: Fast Falcon wins at Calgary Stampede Art Showcase
A Foothills Falcon runner admits he’s brain-dead when he has completed a marathon, however, this marathon had nothing to do with running as he was completing a drawing marathon for his award-winning charcoal sketching Real Love.
Alex Ivan, a Grade 12 student at the Alberta High School of Fine Arts in Okotoks, finished third overall for the Calgary Stampede Western Art Showcase in the high school division and picked up $1,500 for his work. The drawing is of a homeless man, sitting on a blanket on the sidewalk with his faithful dog in his lap.

Football: Bryn Roy closer to his goal of pro football
A former Foothills Falcons football player, drafted to the CFL last week, is wrestling with some heavy decisions in the next few weeks.
Does he follow in dad’s footsteps and pursue a rodeo career? Does he stay in school? Does he start a business career? Or does Bryn Roy put on the red-white-and-blue jersey of the Montreal Alouettes after being drafted in the fifth-round (34th overall) as a linebacker in the CFL draft on May 3.
It’s been a long, strange trip from graduating at the Comp in 2006 to being drafted by the Als.
Roy didn’t play his first-year after graduating from Foothills due to a jaw injury. He played two years of junior college football as Snow College in Utah before transferring to Adams State in Colorado. He played only one game for Adams State because of an injury and in 2011 he transferred to the Texas-AM Commerce Lion.
He got a rude awakening in football-crazed Texas.

Rugby: Foothills has tough test Thursday against powerful Knights
Last week the captain of the Foothills Falcons boys’ rugby team saw something a bit different during his team’s victory over the Chestermere Lakers last week.
This time when the Falcons got a bad break, they kept their composure and came back to win.
The Falcons fell behind 7-0 early in the second half when a Chestermere Laker picked up a punt off a bad bounce and then romped into the try zone. However, the Falcons came back to win the game 22-7 on Thursday at Foothills Composite High School.
The victory, coupled with their 20-7 triumph over the Strathmore Spartans on April 24, gave the Falcons a 2-0 record in the Big Sky Rugby Union.
“This team has more experience and we have been working hard at practice,” said Jack Graham, a Grade 12 scrum half. “We played together and we were able to comeback.”
The Falcons were able to cut the lead to 7-5 when the Falcons’ Chance Hamilton took a lateral and scampered 37 yards to the outside for the try.
The Falcons took the lead for good when their perseverance paid off. The Falcons appeared to score twice, however both times the tries were called back because of a knock up — the Falcons illegally knocking the ball forward.
Finally, they scored the go-ahead try when Harry Parkin jumped on a loose ball in the try zone.

Okotoks: Kelci French a new addition to Canada's women's volleyball team
A former MVP Foothills Falcons volleyball player should get herself a new travel agent. She is trying to get to London, England via Langley, B.C., Winnipeg and Tijuana.
Kelci French, a 2008 graduate of Foothills Composite High School, is a setter with Team Canada which played in an Olympic Women’s Volleyball tournament in Tijuana, Mexico April 29-May 5.
The call to represent her country in Mexico came out of nowhere for French.
“I was at Trinity Western (in Langley) getting ready for exams and I got a call in March telling me that Team Canada needed a setter,” the 22-year-old French said. “Playing in the Olympics has always been a dream of mine but I didn’t think it would come this quickly. My aim was for 2016 (in Rio de Janeiro), which was my realistic goal. This is like a bonus, a bit of surprise but something I fully embrace and am excited about.”
However, when you dream suddenly winds up on your doorstep, it means you have to do a lot of rearranging with your timetable.
“I got all of my exams switched for the end of the year and I was able to write my last two exams in Winnipeg (home of Team Canada),” French said.
Foothills volleyball fans will remember French as being the big hitter for the Falcons four years ago.
“Being a setter is where my heart is, but sometimes you have to play where your team needs you and that’s what happened at Foothills,” French said while waiting for a plane out of the ’Peg airport. “Now my job is full-time setting and I love it… playing in Foothills helped me because you learn different things with every experience you have.”

Rugby: Oilfields holds its own against the defending champs
The two Okotoks high school teams are coming off impressive victories as they prepare for their showdown in girls rugby this Thursday.
The Holy Trinity Knights improved their record to 1-1 in the Big Sky Girls Rugby Union after clobbering the Bow Valley Bobcats 38-0 April 25 in Okotoks.
Their cross-town rivals, the Foothills Falcons beat the Chestermere Lakers 20-0 April 26 to improve their record to 2-0.
The Falcons were able to use their speed despite field conditions that would have been more applicable for mud bogging in their victory over Chestermere.
“We were surprised how well we were able to catch the ball because it was so wet the rain can do a number on the ball,” said Falcons coach Sophie Martin. “We were able to utilize our speed which is our strong point this year.”
The Falcons speedsters include Meg Wescott and Morgan Schultz, who was named the Foothills player of the game in the victory.
“Tianna Going is new to rugby, but she is proving to be really strong in the backfield,” Martin said.
